1800 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-1. Rarity-3. MS-68 (PCGS). Here is another of many of our old friends in the D. Brent Pogue Collection. It hails to our Norweb Collection sale of 1987, where we described it as follows:

Perfectly centered and with broad rims. Reflective surfaces. Beautifully toned with rosy centers surrounded by iridescent blue borders. Sharply struck with every strand of Liberty’s hair separated and full feather detail is visible on the reverse. Slightly later state of the reverse, with a thin crack running from 8:30 through the left field, through the top of the shield, and reaching into the field between the eagle’s breast and its left wing.

An outstanding specimen, surely among the finest known of the date and variety, a coin worthy of the most advanced cabinet.

This is the first year of the new type combining the Draped Bust obverse, now with the star count standardized as 13, with the Heraldic Eagle reverse (that first appeared on quarter eagles of 1796). The new half dime type was short-lived and was continued only to 1805, after which this denomination was not issued again until 1829 at which time the Capped Bust motif was used.
