1822 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. B-1. Rarity-7 (as a Proof). Proof-67 (PCGS). This incredible Gem is yet another old friend from the Eliasberg Collection, where we described it as follows, a narrative still appropriate today:
“The bust of Liberty is rather deeply toned while the eagle and scroll are much lighter ivory. Light silver with pale lilac giving way to faint blue iridescence towards the edges. The high points of the hair curls along with some of the stars are rather lightly defined, probably the result of die spacing. The reverse is generally bold with shallow definition only at the tops of the wings and on the lower olive leaves. Most legend letters on the reverse show evidence of doubling, probably an indication of the piece having received two blows from the press. Frosted devices with deeply mirrored fields.”
There are probably just five or six Proof examples known today with the present example being one of the finest. Another prize for the connoisseur.
