1798 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle. BD-1. Rarity-5+. Close Date, 4 Berries. MS-65 (PCGS). In the Sotheby’s presentation of this gem in 2000 the description included:

Brilliant Uncirculated. Obverse with two mint-caused dots before the face of Liberty, and faint obverse and reverse adjustment marks. The fields are prooflike and with ample die polish lines, an astonishing specimen.

Obverse with closely spaced date with small 8 not touching drapery, the reverse with four berries, thirteen large stars, and ED ST excessively weak [not apparent to us!]. An interesting date with a unique star configuration of 6 by 7 stars. The finest known specimen of this date, housed in a PCGS holder as MS-65, and of the highest rarity and importance. This coin is widely acknowledged as the finest known specimen for this date.

David W. Akers noted in his book on the denomination, "By far the finest 1798 quarter eagle that I have seen was a gem owned a few years ago by Stack’s." Tracking down provenances, reading other opinions of scarcity and rarity, and related activities contribute a great deal to the enjoyment of numismatics in general and to the ownership of specific coins in particular.

This is a poster example of a high-level rarity in "ultra" condition with a wonderful provenance.

Provenance: From Norman Stack’s type set; illustrated in United States Type Coins by Norman Stack, 1986, p. 54; Sotheby’s 7499th sale, New York, June 2000, lot 359.
