1806/5 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. B-1. Rarity-2. MS-66 (PCGS).This splendid Gem will be a treasure in the collection of an advanced specialist in the quarter dollar series. Not only is it an ultra-grade specimen and the very finest certified by PCGS, it is also one of the most fascinating die varieties. The surfaces are lustrous with no significant marks. The hair and feather detail is exceptionally good, far sharper than usually seen on quarter dollars of this era. The toning is old-time and is absolutely gorgeous.
The 1806/5 is the earliest overdate in the quarter dollar series and is the only overdate within the 1804-1807 design type. This overdated die is very unusual, indeed. Remarkable, in fact, as it was previously used to produce 1805-dated quarters (Browning-4). Most overdates involve coinage dies which were not previously in use and had not been hardened. This obverse had been hardened. Accordingly it possibly was heated and softened to accommodate the 6 punch, and then hardened again. |
Interestingly, the 1806/5 overdate is also found in the half dollar series.
Provenance: From the Knoxville Collection described in a catalog by Jay Parrino. |
