1807 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle. BD-1. Rarity-3.
MS-65 (PCGS). This remarkable Gem 1807 quarter eagle is another old friend. A decade ago we sold it as part of the C.L. Lee Collection, after which it was handled by the Goldbergs. This coin has richly lustrous medium gold surfaces and superb eye appeal. It would be difficult to imagine a nicer specimen existing of the last year of the 1796 to 1807 design. As such it will be ideal for inclusion in a type set or a specialized collection.
Over a long period of years few collections, even the great ones, have had an equal example, although Mint State pieces at lower levels can be found.

This reverse die that the Mint used to coin all 1807 quarter eagles was very durable and was also used to strike quarter eagles dated 1805 and 1806 (combined with two different obverses), as well as all dimes dated 1807, the last of the Draped Bust design type.
Provenance: From our sale of the C.L. Lee Collection, September 2005, 1052; Ira and Larry Goldberg’s Pre-Long Beach Sale, August 2008, lot 1225. |
