1936 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE SOLD FOR A
RECORD BREAKING $1.16 MILLION
The Stack's Bowers Galleries Sale Marks the First Time the $1 Million Threshold Has Been Broken by a Medal in a Numismatic Auction

Stack's Bowers Galleries has made history once again!

The company's sale of the 1936 Nobel Peace Prize shatter initial estimates of $50,000-$100,000 when the medal sold for $950,000 at the March 2014 Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo. The additional buyer's premium brought the final sale price to $1.16 million - more than 11 times what experts estimated it would garner. The sale drew in half a dozen bidders from six different countries, with the winning bid coming from a collector in Asia, who asked to remain anonymous.

The medal is only the second Nobel Peace Prize ever to be sold at auction, and the first to be sold in the U.S. It was originally awarded to Argentina's Foreign Minister Carlos Saavedra Lamas in 1936, for his role in ending the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia. It also marked the first time the prize was ever awarded to a Latin American recipient.

The 1861-S Paquet Reverse Double Eagle

By: Jim Matthews, Senior Numismatist and Consignment Director, U.S. Coins

One of the most important highlights in the El Dorado Collection Part II is the famed 1861-S Paquet Reverse double eagle, which the consignor considers his most important numismatic acquisition. Not only is this one of the more famous examples of this prized rarity, but it is also tied for the finest known of this issue at the AU-58 (PCGS) grade level. No Mint State examples apparently exist, not even within the recent Saddle Ridge hoard discovery of double eagles from roughly this period and later. PCGS has seen a total of three examples of this rarity that have earned this grade.

WORLD COIN OF THE WEEK

Very Rare Hupeh-Honan-Anhwei 1932 Soviet Dollar

By: Chris Chatigny, Cataloger

The opening session of the Stack's Bowers and Ponterio April 2014 Hong Kong Showcase Auction is just days away! As our final preview for this auction we have chosen a not-often seen coin from the short-lived yet interesting coinage of the Chinese Soviet state. China's communist forces had their beginning in 1927 with the establishment of the first soviet, the Hailufeng Soviet. As the communist army grew in power and influence it began to establish banks. These banks were mobile and traveled with the armies as they warred with the Kuomintang (nationalist forces) under Chiang Kai-shek. In total six Soviets were established from 1927 to 1933, one of them being the Hupeh-Honan-Anhwei Soviet. In 1932 the coin we feature here was minted for the State Bank of the Chinese Soviet Republic, for use in the areas around the Central Revolutionary Base. To our knowledge, this type was first described by Duncan Raeburn in the Bulletin of The Numismatic Society of China in 1937, and is notable as one of the first Soviet Chinese issues.

By: Frank Van Valen, Numismatist and Cataloger, U.S. Coins

The 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollars celebrate the adventures of the Corps of Discovery and its charting and exploratory expedition to the Pacific Northwest a century earlier. Ordered by President Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark's expedition opened the new frontier in America after the Louisiana Purchase. What better way to celebrate the centennial of such an auspicious and historical event than with a gold coin?

ANSWERS FOR THE AVID COLLECTOR

Do you have a question about anything numismatic? Want to know what's going on here at Stack's Bowers Galleries? If so, send your inquiries to [email protected] and get a response to your important questions from our team of experts!
Question: What is a "generic" coin? I have seen this term used several times.

Answer: "Generic" is a term popular in investment circles for an inexpensive member of a certain design type. For example, among Morgan silver dollars, a coin called "Generic" would be one that sells for at or near the lowest price of any in the series and would include such issues as 1879-S, 1880-S and 1881-S. Among bronze Indian cents, "Generic" coins would include issues from the first decade of the 20th century. When basic prices are listed for a design type without regard to specific varieties within the type, these are sometimes called "Generic" prices.

A Chance Internet Purchase Leads to Bentonian Currency and Loco Focos

On a recent weekend I took a peek at one of the many Internet auction sites I routinely visit in my never-ending search for odd-ball numismatic items for my collection. I struck pay dirt on a "Buy-It-Now" item at one of the sites-it was priced at $55 plus free shipping and I couldn't push the "buy" button quickly enough. I had never seen the likes of it before, though of course it may be familiar to some of our readers.

From the Desk of Q. David Bowers:
How to Display Coins in Certified Holders?

By: Q. David Bowers, Chairman Emeritus

Recently a long-time client and an enthusiastic buyer of most all of my books, O.C., wrote to say: "I love having an album of 'raw' coins. My collection of Washington quarters looks fabulous that way. But I would like to ask for some advice. I want to have my Morgan dollars in an album too. Would it be foolish to buy certified coins, crack them out, and place them in an album? I would keep the descriptive labels about each coin with it. Or, should I keep the coins slabbed? Do you think cracking the coins out of the holders is a bad idea? I believe strongly that the coins, well chosen, should stand up on their own, slabbed or not. What do you think?"

Harvey G. Stack Remembers:
We Win the Gold War! Part 2

By: Harvey G. Stack, Senior Numismatic Consultant

From Coin World 1967

Last week I featured the first part of an editorial I found from a 1967 Coin World about how Stack's led the charge to ease the restrictions that the Treasury Department then had on the importation of gold. The conclusion of the article is offered here.

"We Win Gold War" [Part 2]

"The months went by. Dr. Leland Howard retired, adamant to the end, convinced that his stand was correct. He often referred to his agency as a protectorate, guarding the coin collector against evils that could abound with the freer importation of gold coins. Thomas W. Wolfe inherited the ODGSO mantle. From the outset, he studied the gold coin import picture with care and consideration, listening to the viewpoints of many of the most knowledgeable representatives of the hobby - Dr. V. Clain-Stefanelli, curator, Division of Numismatics, Smithsonian Institution; officials of the American Numismatic Association, the Professional Numismatists Guild, Inc., with Hans M. F. Schulman, also a New York dealer, playing a leading role in the petitions to ease the sharp and for the most part unreasonable regulations that required licenses for all gold coins coming into the United States."
